Illinois employers can earn an income tax credit of up to $1,200 annually for hiring Veterans of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, or Operation Iraqi Freedom. The credit is 5 percent of the total wages paid to every qualified Veteran hired after January 1, 2008. Veterans must work at least 185 days during the tax year for the employer to qualify for the Veteran’s Tax Credit. The Veteran’s Tax Credit can be claimed by employers on 2008 tax returns filed in 2009. To file for the Veteran’s Tax Credit, download the Schedule 1299-D Income Tax Credits Form .
TELEPHONE SUPPORT
November, 2011. The Department of Veterans Affairs is implementing a telephone support program to help the spouses of returning Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans, after a pilot telephone support program showed significant reduction in stress for spouses.
Local caregiver support coordinators are available to assist Veterans and their caregivers in understanding and applying for VA’s many caregiver benefits. VA also has a Web page, www.caregiver.va.gov , with general information on spouse telephone support and other caregiver support programs available through VA and the community.

DOL ANNOUNCES JOB TRAINING GRANTS TO HOMELESS VETS
August, 2011. The Department of Labor (DoL) has announced 23 grants totaling $5,436,148 to provide homeless veterans with job training aimed at helping them succeed in civilian careers. The grants are being awarded by the department’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program. Many veterans face difficulty making the transition from military service to the civilian labor force, and many battle homelessness as a result; These grants will assist more than 3,000 veterans in communities across the country to access the resources they need to find good jobs.
